The celebration of World Information Architecture Day (WIAD) on February 20, 2016 will bring together a diverse community of people including information architects, user experience designers, content strategists, product managers, developers, scholars, and students. Because of the ubiquitous nature of information, we will hear stories of information architecture not just practiced by specialists, but by people holding all sorts of titles, coming from all walks of life. 2016's WIAD celebrates these type of stories. 

The Melbourne inaugural installment of WIAD will be hosted by General Assembly. In the spirit of the 2016 theme "Information Everywhere, Architects Everywhere", we will look at specialist information architecture topics (e-commerce, designing search, IA research methods) and dip into a more fluid definition of how information is designed by designers and journalists to tell stories.

The day will be split into two:

  1. Morning: Focus will be on examples of information architecture in the wild (e-commerce, data visualisation and data journalism)
  2. Afternoon: Two workshops for UX professionals about designing search and research methods for information architecture

    • This panel provides insights into how information architecture is integrated into e-commerce websites. 
    • Panelists:
      • Laura Larkin - JetStar, Google shopping category integration
      • Kate Hunter - Envato, SEO and IA
      • Fiorella Rizza - Envato, Categories in an existing e-commerce environment
  • 10.30 Morning Tea
  • 10.45 Data Visualisation and Data Journalism (Moderated by Jackie Antig). A look into how data, design, code and journalism come together to construct narratives:
    • Speakers:
      • Ri Liu  - Data visualiser who uses design and code to paint narratives of structural inequalities. Currently creating interactive content at The Guardian, her past work has been featured in Fast Company, The Washington Post, Business Insider and Foreign Affairs.
      • Craig Butt - Reporter at The Age and a lecturer at The University of Melbourne's Centre for Advancing Journalism.
  • 11.30 - Careers in UX. Naomi Easson from Agency Iceberg will discuss the UX job market in Melbourne.

    • Option 1: Designing Search, Mags Hanley. Learn how to design internal search engines, including:
      • Pulling it all together
      • Indexing

    • Option 2: User Research Methods for Information Architecture, Davina Gifford, Alex Douglass-Bonner and Jackie Antig. An introductory workshop for those new to UX or curious aboout UX research. Techniques participants will be introduced to and will have a chance to practice:
